Students from the Santa Fe Middle School Honors Program recently held a fund- raiser to benefit the Women’s Center Fund of the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation. In order to participate in the Honors Program, students first had to demonstrate excellence in grades, attendance and discipline. Members of the group sold t-shirts to earn the money for the donation.
“The Middle School Honors program is a good thing to help middle school students reach goals. It also helps others in our community who are fighting a serious disease. It warmed my heart to know people are being helped. I liked knowing I was part of that,” said Jordon Steward, an eighth grade member of the program.
School principal Amy Perryman is in her 21st year as an educator and has been working in the Maury County School System for 14 of those years. Before taking over as principal and starting the Middle School Honors Program, Perryman served as the school’s assistant principal after previously teaching in the Memphis City and Tipton County School Systems. She stated she believes it is important for students to be active in causes that are important to them no matter their age.
“When Mr. Lee Winchester, middle school sponsor of the Honors Program, and I discussed starting this program at Santa Fe School, we felt that a civic service component was vital,” Perryman said. “This year Breast Cancer Awareness was the focus of our efforts. The entire school and community supported the t-shirt sale wonderfully, and we were able to begin the Honors Program and make the donation to the Foundation. We are proud of the efforts of our students to focus on the goals of excellence in academics, behavior, attendance and civic responsibility.”
Funds raised by the students will be used for the Women’s Center/Wigs Fund which was established to provide cancer patients with wigs and various headpieces during their medical treatment. The fund also provides scarves, camisoles and lymphedema garments to women suffering from and recovering from breast cancer.
“The foundation is so grateful to the students at Santa Fe Unit School for their commitment to help individuals in need right here in their community,” said Foundation Executive Director Joe Kilgore.
