Guest are encouraged to browse and shop the downtown stores and enjoy local cuisine in the downtown restaurants while chalk artists create temporary masterpiece on the streets in downtown Columbia. Dr. Marian Haynes, President Elect Arts In Action stated, “Arts in Action and Pet Pals’ mission is to partner with local businesses, schools, government agencies and other non-profits. Events such as this encourage families to look up from their electronic devices, use their creative talents, communicate with others in a safe environment, and take ownership within this community. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
Chalk art dates back to sixteenth century Italy when the Madonnari or Italian folk artist would recreate paintings from the church onto the pavement. The artist followed festivals from town to town creating temporary masterpieces on city streets. Our chalk art festival will include works created by professional chalk artist, local artist and artisans, teams of young people from local churches and youth organizations and families.
The family dog will feel right at home at our chalk art and music festival too. There will be gourmet treats to sample and games and contest designed just for your furry four legged friend. Sonjalyn Dickson Rine, President Elect, Pet Pals of Maury County said, “ We hope this will become a Father’s Day weekend tradition for the whole family, including the family dog!” Guest may enter their pet in the pet costume contest or best pet trick contest and if you don’t have a family dog? You will have an opportunity to meet and adopt a friend for life!
No event would be complete without music and lots of it! The First Farmers and Merchants Bank Chalk Art and Music Festival – Unplugged will feature a variety of “unplugged” or acoustic music presented live throughout the day. Artist will perform on the street and in businesses downtown filling the air with Bluegrass, Newgrass and Americana music playing banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, bass, and other acoustic instruments.
