Event Description

The Building Block School for the Arts announces an upcoming production of Newsies the Musical!
NEWSIES
Alan Menken Jack Feldman Harvey Fierstein

Performances are to take place in our outdoor theatre on July 29, 30, at 6 pm and the 30th at 2 pm at the Cherry Theatre on the campus of Columbia State Community College. 1665 Hampshire Pike. There is plenty of seating for everyone and handicap accessible for those who need it.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, NEWSIES is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike for what’s right.

The Newsies teach us that what we do with our circumstances is up to us. We can settle in and go along with the flow even when it’s wrong or we can stand up for what is right. We don’t need violence to make a difference, to bring change, and to be heard. “Not only that, but there is a story behind the story”. So sit back and “Watch What Happens” as we tell this powerful story of how some street kids stood up to the most powerful man behind the print and WON! We hope that you will embark on this inspirational journey with us and enjoy the humor and friendships made along the way. “This is more than exciting, it’s revolutionary; it’s time!” stated Sherry Johnson the director and a founder of The Building Block School for the Arts as she talked about the biggest cast they’ve had on stage since December 2019 or March of 2020 when they were shut down just days before “opening the most beautiful show with a cast that had bonded and clicked so incredibly together” Sherry continued “but it’s time now, we’re safer, we know how to take care of ourselves and each other as we move forward and we are stomping ready to do this”.

You can purchase tickets at www.buildingblockarts.com/tickets Snacks will be available for purchase and will support our Novel Players Leadership Arts Program.
