Event Description

Every month, SLANT hosts a creative writing workshop for high school students. Workshops are led by a variety of established writers and explore ideas in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, screenwriting, and more.

You can see more of our upcoming workshops at slantnashville.org.

Our teen workshop this July is: Writing in the Woods

It’s summertime! Let’s get outside. In this workshop, we’ll hike a trail in Shelby Park and, notebooks in hand, take time to explore our surroundings. We’ll take breaks to write, draw inspiration from nature, and try some creative writing prompts as we go.

We’ll meet at Shelby Bottoms Nature Center at 10:00 AM and hit the trail. Then we’ll arrive back at the Nature Center by noon. The folks at the Nature Center said we can use their classroom area if it rains. So if there’s bad weather, we’ll still meet, write about nature, and watch the rain.

What you’ll need:
1) Walking shoes
2) Comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty
3) A notebook (or something hard to write on)
4) A water bottle
