Listerhill Credit Union joins forces with Maury County Public Schools to open the only on campus satellite location at Spring Hill High School Raider Nation Retail Store.
The satellite branch of Listerhill Credit Union is directly relatedξ to “Key 6” of the Keys to College & Career Readiness initiative by Maury County Schools which it’s goal is to ensure all students are financially literate by graduation.ξ Students will work in the credit union branch, at the school.
As a nonprofit financial cooperative, Listerhill strives to give back to communities it serves by bettering the lives of community members. One way Listerhill achieves its mission is through promoting financial wellness, and classrooms are an excellent place to begin teaching concepts of financial literacy.
“It’s not enough just to teach it,” Brad Green, Listerhill Credit Union CEO, said. “We want students to understand responsible money management and financial wellness on their terms, and have hands-on experience.”
‘The Hill’ at Spring Hill High School will be open five days per week during the students’ lunch period. Each day, The Hill will be staffed by marketing Work-Based Learning students, called The Hill Ambassadors. These student Ambassadors are responsible for promoting the unique ways members can manage their finances, generate interest in The Hill Account and engage with peers about financial well being in person and through The Hill’s social media.
“One of our biggest goals in our effort to improve lives in the community is to facilitate and foster conversations of financial wellness not only on a Listerhill-to-student basis, but on student-to-student basis,” Kristen Mashburn, Listerhill’s Chief of Staff of Retail, said. “We want the students talking to each other.”
“I am excited to be a Hill Ambassador because I’ll be able to gain on-the-job experience and help my peers learn the importance of keeping up with their finances,” Cobi LeCroy, Spring Hill High School senior, said.
In keeping with the “Seven Keys to College and Career Readiness” unveiled by Maury County Public Schools last January, the goals of the The Hill at Spring Hill High School fall under the sixth key: financial literacy.
Because financial literacy is important to Listerhill, the credit union proactively seeks ways to develop opportunities to provide free financial literacy courses and events in local classrooms. The Hill at Spring Hill High School will give students the ability to have a real relationship with a financial institution while safely practicing what they have learned in class.
“With an ATM, an actual branch and a person in the banking industry to answer students’ questions on Spring Hill High School’s campus, our students have banking access all day long,” Richard Godfrey, Assistant Principal of Spring Hill High School, said. “This also allows our marketing and Work Based Learning students real world
banking experience. Listerhill is the natural partner because they are local, trusted and have donated lots of money to Maury County Public Schools.”
The Hill is Listerhill’s account for those 15 to 29 years old. The Hill Account offers free checking with no minimum balance, a free debit card and free mobile banking. There is also an “Oops Refund” feature that provides account holders refunds on insufficient funds or overdraft fees up to five times annually.
The grand opening will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony by the school district and Maury Alliance on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. at Spring Hill High School, located at 1 Raider Lane in Columbia.
