Following a presentation at its April 28th meeting, the Maury County Public School Board voted to award the Boys & Girls Club of Maury County its before and after school program contract for the 2016-2017 school year. The Boys & Girls Club of Maury County was recognized in 2015 as having the number one academic program among all 75 Tennessee club locations.
Currently, the Club serves 400+ youth per calendar year at two Columbia locations through daily after-school programs and full-day programs during summer and school breaks. Beginning Aug. 1, 2016, the Boys & Girls Club of Maury County will operate “Greatness Academies” for all MCPS schools from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Students who enroll will gain access to the Club’s extensive enrichment programs designed to help each child reach their full potential. Focusing on three priority areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character and Citizenship, Club programs include tutoring, daily homework help, drilling of math and reading skills through interactive software programs, “Brain Gain” hands-on learning over summer breaks, “Career Launch” job readiness training, nutrition education, “Diplomas 2 Degrees” college preparation, “Money Matters,” and much more. In addition to completing schoolwork assigned during the day, students will learn about financial literacy, practice resume writing and mock job interviewing, and set goals for themselves after high school graduation. The Club also provides ACT Prep classes to juniors and seniors.
Since opening its doors in 1999, 100% of Boys & Girls Club of Maury County seniors have graduated on time. Last year the Club provided over 1,800 hours of one-on-one tutoring, with 76% of youth in the tutoring program improving their grade point average over the course of the school year. Additionally, 96% of those students improved in at least one subject.
“The Boys & Girls Club of Maury County has a proven track record of success,” said Dr. Chris Marczak, Director of Maury County Schools. “The Club offers the best after school program in the state, and that’s exactly what our students need to achieve their dreams. I am confident that this partnership will not only further our 7 Keys to College and Career Readiness initiative, but will also advance our community’s goals for education and long-term growth.”
“We are honored and excited to deepen our partnership with Maury County Public Schools,” said Chris Poynter, CEO, Boys & Girls Club of Maury County. ξ”The hours between 3-6pm are critical.ξ Through the Greatness Academies, we can reinforce and support the learning that is happening during the school day, while also helping our kids develop the character and life skills they will need to succeed.ξ We’re humbled by this opportunity to expand to serve all areas of the county.ξ I’m especially grateful to our dedicated Board of Directors for their vision and commitment to growing to meet the needs of our county’s youth.ξ This initiative will help hundreds more kids each year to reach their full potential.”
